As AI search and LLMs continue to change how people find information, more companies are asking whether their content should be optimized for SEO, LLMO and Google AI Overviews.
But should every blog be optimized for all three?
No. While some topics can be optimized for SEO, LLMO and AI Overviews at the same time, applying all three strategies to every blog could limit the customer journey.
Different topics serve different stages of the journey, so optimization should depend on what the audience is looking for and where they are in the decision-making process.

Top 4 SEO Blog Tips for 2027
1. Not Every Topic Needs SEO, LLMO & Google AI Overview Optimization

SEO, LLMO, and AI Overviews can overlap. Not every topic has the same opportunity for each. Some informational topics will be well suited for SEO and AI Overviews but have less opportunity for LLMO. LLMO is more relevant for transactional and comparison-focused blog topics where people use AI to evaluate products, services, or options.
Informational content still plays an important role in an SEO strategy. In 2025, approximately 49.8% of Google searches were informational, compared with 14.8% that were commercial. While search behavior may continue to change, informational queries still represent a significant share of searches.
Creating a variety of topic types can help businesses broaden brand awareness, build topical authority, and reach customers at different stages of the search journey.
2. Use Human Judgment and Creativity in Your Content Strategy
AI and SEO tools can help marketers identify keywords and potential topics. However, human judgment is still needed to determine what an audience will actually find valuable.
In my experience writing hundreds of blogs and using SEO topic tools, some of my best-performing content came from creating topics specifically for an audience rather than choosing topics based on keyword opportunities from a tool.
Understanding who the content is for and what they want to know can make a significant difference in engagement. For example, this website has generated 300+ organic clicks per month despite being less than six months old, and I don't use SEO topic tools.
3. Invest in Unique Research and Credible Perspectives
Of the 25 blogs I created without SEO tools, 80% ranked on the first page of Google and appeared in AI Overviews, while 10% received neither.
Each blog topic was developed through creative thinking and an understanding of what my target audience is searching for, rather than relying on automated topic recommendations.
And each also offered a unique perspective supported by research, giving readers information beyond what they could easily find elsewhere. This suggests that original ideas, audience insight, research, and unique perspectives can contribute to content performance across both traditional and AI search.
4. Reevaluate Your Content Strategy if Clicks Decline
Ahrefs found that AI Overviews were associated with a 34.5% decline in organic CTR in 2025, increasing to a 58% decline in 2026 for top-ranking pages.
At the current rate, this is a growing trend that businesses need to account for when developing their content strategies. Ranking highly in Google is no longer enough to guarantee the same level of website traffic.
Important Note: Declining clicks doesn't always mean AI is the reason. Content may also fail to receive clicks because it isn't interesting, informative, or differentiated enough to give users a reason to visit the website.
Understanding which topics and content formats your audience finds interesting will become increasingly important. Repeating the same content strategy year after year may not be enough as organic clicks continue to decline.
